Depending on rainfall in winter, the natural beauty of the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is enhanced by the almost magical appearance of desert wildflowers in the spring. One of the nation’s largest state parks, the 600,000-acre Anza-Borrego Desert is within a two-hour scenic drive from downtown San Diego and offers visitors endless opportunities to experience the wonders of the desert.
In addition to the wildflowers, the park features 500 miles of dirt roads, 110 miles of hiking trails, washes, palm groves, cacti and sweeping vistas. You may also be lucky enough to see roadrunners, kit foxes, mule deer and bighorn sheep.
Dubstep star Skrillex, a recent triple Grammy Award-winner, will headline the May 26 and May 27 “I Love This City” electronic music festival at Cricket Wireless Amphitheatre on Memorial Day weekend.
The festival, which will be open to all ages, will feature dozens of artists performing on multiple stages. “I Love This City” is, in fact, a two-city event, since it will also be held May 25 and 26 at San Francisco’s At&T Park (where admission will be limited to festival-goers 18 and older).
The specific lineups for each city remains to be seen, however, since Monday afternoon’s announcement of the festival seems designed to build anticipation, more than divulge specific details. Among the artists who are confirmed to perform (although in which city is still unclear) are Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki, Chuckie, Excision, A-Trak, Crystal Method (DJ Set), R3HAB, Kill The Noise, Brodinski, 12th Planet, MiMOSA, Felix Cartal, Dirtyphonics, Jaguar Skills, Adventure Club, Holy Ghost!, Cut Chemist, The M Machine, Helicopter Showdown, NiT GriT, Harvard Bass, FareOh, Picture Plane, AC Slater, Oliver, Sofi, TJR and others.
The exact artists, ticket prices and on-sale dates for both cities will be announced Friday. San Diego Padres season-ticket holders will have a nopportunity for a pre-sale ticket purchase, according to a Padres’ representative. In addition, “three major headliners will be announced on April 23,” according to Monday’s announcement.
April 23 happens to be the day after the second weekend of this year’s sold-out Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival concludes. Among the electronic music artists performing at Coachella who could be potential co-headliners at the Petco Park edition of “I Love This City” are Justice, Kaskade, David Guetta, Miike Snow, DJ Shadow and Nero.
This will be the second electronic music event to be held on the field at Petco Park. Last fall, electronic music star Deadmau5 headlined a pre-Halloween concert at the stadium. That one-night concert drew an audience of 13,200, according to a representative for the Padres. Of those, 8.000 were permitted on the field.
Skrillex also performed at Petco Park last year, but in the much smaller Park at the Park, the grassy area behind the outfield that serves as a public park on non-Padres game days. Numerous concerts have been held in the Park at the Park. But only eight (if our math is correct) have taken place in the stadium itself — that is, with the stage set up on the infield and fans seated (or standing) on the field and in the stands, going back to the Rolling Stones’ memorable Petco Park show in late 2005.
The San Diego “We Love This City” festival is being co-produced by Live Nation (which stage the Deadmau5 show at Petco Park last fall) and LED Presents. Stay tuned to this web site and the festival web site for for more information on the festival.
Cleveland National Forest
For those who love hiking in the great outdoors, this national forest is a must-visit location in the San Diego area. Some trails lead adventurous hikers on voyages over six miles and elevations above 6,000 feet. Other trails are shorter, perhaps one mile long, and offer chances to see wildlife. Right now with plenty of snow is a great time to visit Mt Laguna in the Cleveland National Forest. Enjoy hiking, cross country skiing and sledding just 1 hour from San Diego’s Pacific Beaches!
Buck the trend. Be un-boring and visit San Diego. We offer private rooms for you and your better half. Every day is Valentines Day at Lucky D’s. Book now!
Once upon a time, we locals would head to Del Mar or Mission Beach to set up camp for a day of seaside drinking and partying under the sun. However, in early 2008 San Diego officially passed a Beach Alcohol Ban which now prohibits any drinking on the beach or bay.
Pissed off we were, but we smart San Diegans would never let such a legality interrupt our day-time party plans. Immediately following the Beach Alcohol Ban came the mighty rise of San Diego pool parties. Grab your bikini, heels and water guns, and hop on this trend.
As one would assume, Hard Rock Hotel San Diego was first to begin a wild pool party dubbed Intervention, as inspired by the original and now legendary Rehab event at the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. We locals couldn’t get enough of Hard Rock’s iconic pool party madness, and thus began spinoffs at all luxury rooftop lounges across the downtown San Diego cityscape. From Ivy Rooftop at the Andaz Hotel to Siren Lounge at the Se Hotel, the adults-only pools at Manchester Grand Hyatt and Hilton San Diego Bayfront, and even the under-the-radar Lafayette Hotel in North Park, many of the hottest hotels in San Diego are, or have been, home to pool parties that we locals will never forget. Spreading up the San Diego coastline like wild fire, The Rave House, ahem, Wave House in Mission Beach and Arterra at Del Mar Marriott are also home to notable beach parties and posh poolside events. And when the party ends, everyone knows the only place to go is Five/Ten Sunday Intermission at Side Bar.
If you’re more into mimosa bars and brunch soirees than rowdy pool parties and beach-chic dress codes, not to worry, we have a Sunday Funday plan for you, too. From Groove 24/7 Brunch at The Pearl to Unplugged Sunday Brunch at Analog and Sunday Brunch Party at West Coast Tavern, our favorite San Diego restaurants go far beyond the eggs and entertainment basics to serve you an epic Sunday Funday bash.
San Diego county is home to one of the most dynamic beer scenes in America and arguably the world. With more than 35 local breweries, our city has more craft brewers than any other city in the country. Fanatically innovative brewers around the globe are creating new beers with unorthodox ingredients and techniques. Skip the bland international lagers sold everywhere on earth, seek out small-batch, artisan-made beers in their native habitats and drink them!
The list of San Diego brewers is long, colorful and filled with passionate brew masters whose enthusiasm and exuberance are downright intoxicating. Here are just a few.
Stone Brewing Company’s new $13 million facility is a must for those who worship the golden nectar. Their World Bistro & Gardens, which specializes in delicious and creative preparations of locally grown, organic produce and natural meats, is a fantastic place to soak in the sun and learn the ins and outs of pairing award-winning beer with great food. Don’t miss the Arrogant Bastard Ale Onion Rings.
Karl Strauss Brewing Company was the first brewery to reintroduce San Diego to locally brewed, handcrafted beer since brewpubs were banned during Prohibition. Twenty years later, their Brewery Restaurants serve 10 handcrafted beers on tap, including their original Amber Lager.
AleSmith Brewing Company - #5 on BeerAdvocate’s, “Best on the Planet,” list is an unassuming, artisan brewer that’s deeply rooted in the homebrewing community. Award-winning creations include their incarnation of a Belgian Strong Ale playfully named Horny Devil, and their special edition Speedway Stout, a jet-black Imperial Stout filled with dark chocolate and strong coffee flavors. A tasting room is open Friday and Saturday afternoons.
Ballast Point Brewing Company’s Yellow Tail Pale Ale is a local staple for thirsty San Diegans. Started as Home Brew Mart in 1992, this craft brewery has become a local favorite and an international gold medal winner.
Alpine Beer Company opened its doors in the fall of 2002. Years before, an interest in craft brewing developed into an actual goal for the future. There were years of home brew competitions, brew science classes, and extended beer runs thinly disguised as vacations. Drink Alpine Ale or go to bed.
San Diego also offers a diverse range of bars and restaurants that truly specialize in rare beers from local brewers and around the globe.
Neighborhood, located in downtown San Diego’s East Village, offers more than 27 local craft brews on tap and a creative, upscale take on classic American dishes like burgers. Tasting flights of San Diego beers and international selections are available.
Toronado San Diego, located in the North Park neighborhood, is a sibling of San Francisco’s famous beer outpost. At Toronado San Diego, the focus is clearly on craft beer with 50 beers on tap featuring the best from local, domestic and international breweries. Bottled offerings number more than 230 and focus on Belgian, French, German and English brews.
Hamilton’s Tavern, located in the historic South Park area near downtown San Diego, is the oldest beer and wine licensed establishment in San Diego, with over 75 years of service. Hamilton’s offers the highest quality ales and craft beers from around the world and boasts one of the most diverse bottle selections in San Diego.
